A Chicken Full of Jewels – Naomi Alexander
A Chicken Full of Jewels: Domesticity In Turmoil tells the true story of Naomi Alexander ROI's abusive relationship with her late husband, Leo. A Holocaust survivor and immigrant from Russia, Leo represented adventure and excitement, tantalising Naomi with his wild tales and bravery. However, those same aspects of Leo's personality were also symptomatic of trauma, which over time came to be expressed through a need for control, and, ultimately, abuse.
Designed to raise awareness of domestic violence, this book is filled with over a hundred remarkable images, drawn on an iPad, which capture the reader with the charm and skill that embody Naomi's art. Her pictures are accompanied by her emotionally charged text, filled with raw honesty and evocative humour. Together, they highlight the characteristic signs of abuse, as well as the powerful techniques that eventually saved her.
'An important and ambitious work, I found it incredibly moving, brave, and honest' – Eileen Cooper OBE RA, artist and former Keeper of the Royal Academy of Arts
'This is a story of courage, survival, and coping in a relationship that no one should have to go through... Naomi has used her power to visualise and create vivid scenes that have brought this story to life. I have nothing but complete respect for her honesty and her daring vulnerability' – Adebanji Alade, President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters
