Pictured: Palmer Land, Antarctic Peninsula, 2012 – flow in glaciers is both brittle and plastic, near the surface and at depth respectively. Within the uppermost steep parts of a glacier, the main mass of ice can separate from ice clinging to a rock face, forming a deep crevasse referred to as a bergschrund. The bergschrund in this image is visible below the fluted snow and rock outcrops.
